Dear friends as IBA Sukkur is going to conduct tests for BPS05-15 next month inshAllah. You have to face 10 MCQs of error Correction & Sentence Structure.
Sentence Structure & Error Correction are very necessary for writing error-free English.
Book Suggestions:
For Error Correction & Sentence Structure you should read the Books : "To the point & Wren & Martin"
For Error Correction: You must know the way to agree subject with verb.
They is going karachi.
In above sentence 'They' (Subject) doesn't match with verb 'is'.
So, Subject-Verb agreement portion will teach you to use appropriate verb for subjects.
Errors in the use of Noun:
Explanation: Nouns like scenery, furniture, news, information, luggage and bread are always used in the singular. They do not have a plural form.
Incorrect: He told these news to me.
Correct: He told me this news.
Errors in the use of Pronoun:
Incorrect: Each of these boys play cricket well.
Correct: Each of these boys plays cricket well.
After each of we use a plural noun or pronoun and a singular verb.
Incorrect: Each boy and each girl were given a book.
Correct: Each boy and each girl was given a book.
Incorrect: Your problem is bigger than me.
Correct: Your problem is bigger than mine.
Errors in the use of Verb:
The verb suggest should be used with a gerund or a that-clause. It cannot be used with a to-infinitive.
The verbs discuss, describe, order and request are transitive verbs. They should be followed by direct objects, and not prepositions.
Incorrect: We discussed about his plans.
Correct: We discussed his plans.
Incorrect: He described about the situation.
Correct: He described the situation.
Incorrect: I have ordered for two cups of coffee.
Correct: I have ordered two cups of coffee.
Incorrect: She requested for my help.
Correct: She requested my help.
Errors in the use of adjective:
Incorrect: He wasted his all wealth.
Correct: He wasted all his wealth.
All, both and half Quantifiers always go before the possessives.
Incorrect: Let’s go quiet somewhere.
· Correct: Let’s go somewhere quiet.
In above example, adjective are usually goes after the expressions like somewhere.
Incorrect: You have much dresses.
· Correct: You have many dresses.
“much” is used with the uncountable nouns, while “many” is used with the countable nouns.
Incorrect: Chennai is further from Delhi than Gurgaon.
· Correct: Chennai is farther from Delhi than Gurgaon.
“Further” is used to represent ‘additional’, while “Farther” is used to talk about the distance.
Incorrect: He is more stronger than his brother.
Correct: He is stronger than his brother.
Try to avoid the usage of double comparatives in your sentence formation.
Errors in the use of adverb
Incorrect: I know to swim.
Correct: I know how to swim.
Know cannot be directly followed by an infinitive. Instead we use the structure know how to.
Incorrect: She angrily spoke.
Correct: She spoke angrily.
Adverbs of manner usually go in the end-position.
Incorrect: I am much tired.
Correct: I am very tired.
Much does not mean the same as very.
Correct: I am very sorry.
Very is used without much before adjectives and adverbs in the positive degree.
Incorrect: He plays tennis good.
Correct: He plays tennis well.
Good is an adjective. The adverb for this meaning is well.
